Bamian — 2017
This site-specific project involved painting abandoned military tanks in different locations across Afghanistan. By introducing non-symbolic painted motifs onto these remnants of conflict, I sought to shift their familiar visual identity and disrupt the way they were immediately read.
Working directly within the landscape, the project explored the relationship between object, surface, and context, and how a change in appearance can alter the meaning and perception of an existing form. Rather than illustrating or replacing the history attached to these objects,
the interventions created a space between what the objects were, what they had become, and how they could be perceived anew.
